Some interesting Del Mar history and facts:
Southern California is well known for its ideal climate and growing conditions. The same held true back in the late 1800′s when farmers used California to grow fruits and nuts. Having a place to showcase and market their production in the area was not available until around 1883 when an agricultural fair was organized . These fairs were held in several places in San Diego area including Escondido, Oceanside and Del Mar. As these fairs became more popular and in demand, so too did the desire to know who had the fasted horse.
Finding funds to host the fairs were always a problem. A state proposition was approved to legalize on-track racing on private tracks. The state of California shared in the betting revenue and soon looked for a permanent site for the fair because of the steady inflow of revenue. Several locations were considered in the San Diego area, some fairly distant to the south which would have limited the amount of traffic from counties to the north. It was finally decided in 1933, that the Del Mar golf course would be the most appropriate place for its operations.. A couple of years later additional land was purchased in the immediate location were grants were awarded for construction of facilities and by 1936 the San Diego county fair was permanently hosted in Del Mar.
Bing Crosby was the founding president of the Del Mar Turf Club.
